International Student Energy Summit 2015 in Bali – A youth initiative
JAKARTA, INDONESIA – June 7th 2015 – Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Indonesia in partnership with Student Energy, an international not-for-profit organization which initiates youth engagement in the energy sector, will hold the International Student Energy Summit (ISES) 2015 this June 10th until June 13th 2015 at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre, Bali.
President Joko Widodo is scheduled to give a presidential lecture on the closing day of the conference and Vice President Jusuf Kalla will officially open this biennial summit on the 10th of June 2015. Chairman of ISES 2015 and Geological Engineering student at ITB, Hilman Syahri Fathoni, stated “this summit will truly bring the world to Indonesia with over 660 student delegates from 100 countries planned to be in attendance. We have great representation from our country as well with approximately 25% of the delegates being from Indonesia. There will be 70 international and national expert speakers in energy and sustainable development including Sri Mulyani (Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, World Bank), His Excellency Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (Former President of Maldives) and Dr. Noeleen Heyzer (Former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations).”
The main theme of the ISES 2015 is "Connecting the Unconnected" inspired by the need to address the gap in energy access that exists for many developing nations. The event will promote balanced dialogue on polarised energy issues and will highlight Indonesia’s vast energy potential. The whole ISES 2015 committee has high hopes that this event will be a breakthrough for youth engagement in energy and will provide new perspective to our global energy challenges. “We want to bring a new way of thinking to the energy system, the idea that it is possible to move forward while leaving no one behind” said Hilman.
ISES 2015 will be a four-day event that will feature a case competition, field trip, and engaging social events. The event will be supported by students from various Indonesian universities including UI, Udayana University, UNPAD, UNDIP, UGM and Trisakti University. Dubbed Friends of ISES, these students are proud to say that they have contributed to the future of energy by helping to make this event possible.
It was a remarkable achievement for Indonesia and ITB to be selected as the host of the 2015 International Student Energy Summit. ITB participated in a long and competitive bidding process against other notable universities such as Carnegie Mellon University in the USA, TU Delft in the Netherlands, and other universities in Canada, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Indonesia is the first Asian country to hold the 4th ISES, which previously had been held three times in Calgary, Canada (2009), Vancouver, Canada (2011), and Trondheim, Norway (2013).
“We are thrilled to see the International Student Energy Summit be held in Indonesia this year,” says Co-Founder and Executive Director of Student Energy, Kali Taylor. “This event demonstrates Indonesia’s commitment to a bright energy future and their belief in youth’s ability to make a difference.”
Throughout the 2 year long planning process, the ITB student team has been assisted by a Technical Advisory Board, which consists of academics and lecturers in energy and environment, as well as a High Level Advisory Board, consisting of CEOs of companies involved in the national energy industry.
Prof. Ir. Tutuka Ariadji, M.Sc., Ph.D., the Head of Technical Advisory Board ISES 2015, said “ We are honoured and proud to be given the opportunity as the host of ISES 2015. With this conference, we long for the exposure of Indonesian energy potential to the world. As we know, Indonesia is blessed with myriad geothermal energy resources, coal, biofuel and solar energy that widely extends throughout the country, unfortunately the lack infrastructure hinder us to optimise these potentials. Therefore, advances in technology and methods to wisely use them are essential in order to improve wellness of people sustainably and continuously. ISES 2015 will be the place where students from all around the world collaborate in optimising energy potential."
